Receive the Holy Spirit

Part 1
By Dennis Rhodes

It is winter Downunder. Where I live we have mild winters with overnight temperatures rarely
getting down to 0° celcius. The room temperature can be a bit uncomfortable though if we do not
have some sort of heating system. In this rented house we enjoy a slow combustion wood heater-
like an open wood fire in a metal box, with a strengthened glass door. It is my job to keep the fire
burning. How?

2Ti 1:6 For this reason, I am reminding you to fan into flames the gift of God that is
within you through the laying on of my hands.
2Ti 1:7 For God did not give us a spirit of timidity but one of power, love, and self-

Paul is writing to Timothy and says that genuine faith is in Timothy as it was in his grandmother
and mother. Then he says For this reason …fan into flames the gift that is in you through the laying
on of my hands. The phrases “the laying on of my hands” and “the gift of God” are connected in to
what he says next that God has given us a(His) spirit

Act 8:14 Now when the apostles who were at Jerusalem heard that Samaria had
received the word of God,(they believed) they sent Peter and John to them,
Act 8:15 who, when they had come down, prayed for them that they might receive
the Holy Spirit.
Act 8:16 For as yet He had fallen upon none of them. They had only been baptised in
the name of the Lord Jesus.
Act 8:17 Then they laid hands on them, and they received the Holy Spirit.
Act 8:18 And when Simon saw that through the laying on of the apostles’ hands the
Holy Spirit was given, he offered them money,
Act 8:19 saying, “Give me this power also, that anyone on whom I lay hands may
receive the Holy Spirit.”
Act 8:20 But Peter said to him, “Your money perish with you, because you thought that
the gift of God could be purchased with money!

Take note of the bolded words above. It is obvious that the GIFT OF GOD is the embrace of the
Holy Spirit received through the laying on of hands, through prayer-AFTER believing in Jesus. The
Apostles and Luke(the writer) were obviously surprised that they had not received the Holy Spirit
when they first believed….so they made sure that they did receive Him- The Gift of God. Luke
writes in Acts 8:16 – “For as yet He had fallen upon none of them”

The word here for fallen is epipipto, which means to embrace (with affection) or seize (with more
or less violence; literally or figuratively): – fall into, fall on, fall upon, lie on, press upon.(Strongs)

Have you my brother or sister had the Lord Jesus the Spirit embrace you? Have you had Him fall
into you yet?
Has Jesus fallen on you or lain on you pressing upon you yet? Believe me you would know if you
This experience is what has come to be known as the Baptism in the Holy Spirit.

Here Luke says, “For as yet He(the Holy Spirit) had fallen or embraced with affection none of

I will never forget the first time I felt the Holy Spirit -GOD EMBRACE ME. Oh yes, I felt Him and
it was soooo good!! How did the Apostles know that the multitudes had NOT had this experience of
receiving the Holy Spirit yet?

We are not told that….but what we are told is that the Apostles knew WHEN they had received the
Spirit of God–the Gift of God. They prayed for them to receive the Spirit and laid their hands upon
them. The Holy Spirit came upon them.

Act 8:17 Then they laid hands on them, and they received the Holy Spirit.
Act 8:18 And when Simon saw that through the laying on of the apostles’ hands the Holy Spirit was given, he offered them money,

It is plain as day, that if Simon could tell by looking at these Samaritan believers that they had
received the Holy Spirit, then something visible or audible or both had happened when they
received the Holy Spirit.

Experience tells us that when this occurs it is not always the speaking in tongues.

The Holy Spirit EMBRACES our very spirit and saturates our soul. He is felt. This is one of the
most wonderful things a human being can experience…God filling him/her full with Himself. Some
may swoon and fall upon the ground weeping or laughing or both! Others may burst into praises in
a language the Holy Spirit gives them. Others may squirm around being delivered of demons by the
Mighty Holy Spirit. God moves in and takes possession and fills the Temple with glory, ie

You will know if you have had the Spirit of God fall upon you….if you have not , YOU CAN.
This is the Promise of the Father for all His children and eventually all men.
But you who have come to believe in Jesus Christ and been baptised in water in His name…what
about you?

Have you received the Holy Spirit since you first believed? That was Paul’s question not mine.

Act 19:1 And it happened, while Apollos was at Corinth, that Paul, having passed
through the upper regions, came to Ephesus. And finding some disciples

Act 19:2 he said to them, “Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?” So they
said to him, “We have not so much as heard whether there is a Holy Spirit.”
Act 19:3 And he said to them, “Into what then were you baptized?” So they said, “Into
John’s baptism.”
Act 19:4 Then Paul said, “John indeed baptized with a baptism of repentance, saying to
the people that they should believe on Him who would come after him, that is, on Christ

Act 19:5 When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord
Act 19:6 And when Paul had laid hands on them, the Holy Spirit came upon them, and
they spoke with tongues and prophesied.

Again, please see that believing in Jesus is not how one receives the embrace of the Holy
Spirit….nor is it by being baptised…but “when Paul had laid hands on them, the Holy Spirit came
upon them, and they spoke with tongues and prophesied.”

Of course we dare not limit God. He can fall upon someone when they first believe..but these two
examples which He ensured we could read about show a subsequent experience after FIRST
BELIEVING. Paul Himself had this experience. He was knocked off his donkey to the ground and
saw the Lord Jesus. Saul believed on Jesus at that moment calling Him Lord. But it was 3 days later
when Ananias was sent to him.
Jesus said to Ananias

Act 9:12 And(Saul) hath seen in a vision a man named Ananias coming in, and putting
his hand on him, that he might receive his sight. But when Ananias actually goes to
Act 9:17 And Ananias went his way, and entered into the house; and putting his hands
on him said, Brother Saul, the Lord, even Jesus, that appeared unto thee in the way as
thou camest, hath sent me, that thou mightest receive thy sight, and be filled with the
Holy Ghost. (Just as He sent me to India to pray for a brother)

There you see? This is the same experience as that of the Samaritans in Acts 8…and the disciples of
John in Acts 19 and of the 120 in the upper room…and the 3000 who were newly saved and
baptised on the day of Pentecost. The same experience. They all believed first…and then afterwards
received the Holy Spirit.

With Cornelius and his household it was quicker and in a different order!

Act 10:44 While Peter was still speaking these words, the Holy Spirit fell upon all those
who heard the word.
Act 10:45 And those of the circumcision who believed were astonished, as many as
came with Peter, because the gift of the Holy Spirit(the gift of God- 2Tim1:6) had been
poured out on the Gentiles also.
Act 10:46 For they heard them speak with tongues and magnify God. Then Peter
answered,Act 10:47 “Can anyone forbid water, that these should not be baptized who have
received the Holy Spirit just as we have?”
Act 10:48 And he commanded them to be baptised in the name of the Lord. Then they
asked him to stay a few days.

So here is the same things. They believed while Peter preached. Their belief is a gift from God. God
falls upon them in His loving embrace–the result is praises and prophesyings in unknown, never
learned before languages. Amazing. Peter never laid hands upon them–but the Lord sure did!!
The gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out on them.

To pour out?

It means ekcheo ekchuno ek-kheh’-o, ek-khoo’-no From G1537 and χε ω cheo
(to pour); to pour forth; figuratively to bestow: – gush (pour) out, run greedily (out), shed (abroad,
forth), spill.

Jesus said that the Father will bestow upon you a Kingdom…yes- The Holy Spirit baptism–or
embrace brings your spirit into the reality of that Kingdom. Without this experience you do not
experience the Kingdomit all remains out of reach even though you believe in Jesus.

You are
sadly left to be a believer in your head only , while not having the infilling, the gushing, pouring
spillings of the Holy Spirit in you. BUT YOU CAN!! AND YOU MUST…YOU MUST!!

One brother has written

The record states, “While Peter yet spake these words, the Holy Ghost fell on them which heard the
word. And…they heard them speak with tongues and magnify God” (Acts 10:44-46). Later we find
that when Paul was on his way to Ephesus he met some disciples of John the Baptist who had been
baptised in water unto repentance, but had heard nothing about receiving the Holy Ghost. “And
when Paul had laid his hands upon them, the Holy Ghost came on them; and they spake with
tongues and prophesied (Acts 19:1-7).
I speak the truth when I suggest that not one in a million of New Age, Metaphysical, and New
Thought adherents have received any such supernatural experience in the Holy Spirit! The fact is,
they have not even met Jesus Christ as SAVIOUR! Nor have they experientially appropriated the
CLEANSING POWER OF THE BLOOD OF CHRIST! I also speak the truth when I say that men
whose spirits have not been quickened by HIS SPIRIT are motivated and controlled by the intellect
of the soul (carnal mind), rather than by the life of the spirit. That which they perceive as their
“inward Christ consciousness” is in reality just the awesome power of their soul life! Just as a man
or woman, without a mate, is not a whole person, and therefore missing a dimension of human
reality, so the spirit of man which has not experientially been joined to the Spirit of God in a
supernatural union of life, is lacking in its spiritual ability and capacity. It is this very condition that
spawns the whole system of “intellectual religion” which is pawned off and misinterpreted as
spiritual life! J.Preston Eby

My brother or sister…..see what Eby says above? I agree and so does scripture. If you have not
received the Baptism in the Holy Spirit–the embrace with affection–then you are living in your own
strength and your own faith and effort. This is dead religion!!!

Your spirit longs to join with the Lord Jesus but your head is stronger so you remain only in your soul and intellect. How sad!! You
may be a pastor, or a missionary or Sunday school teacher…whatever you are it counts for nothing
if you have not received God’s promise- the Gift of God Who is the Holy Spirit of Promise.
This experience of receiving the embrace of God which is the full immersion into the Spirit is God’s
promise to you TODAY.

It does not matter that the Apostles have all died. God filled Paul through Ananias- “a certain
disciple at Damascus Acts 9:10
God commands you to wait until you receive power from on high.

Act 1:8a But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you;…”

Friend this is a separate thing from initially believing in Jesus Christ. Have you received the
embrace of the Holy Spirit?

Has He fallen upon you?

Today the Lord Jesus wants to give you the embrace of His Spirit, and He can do it without anyone laying hands on you-like Cornelius and the
maybe 50 others in his house. All you need to do is ask Father for the Holy Spirit’s embrace. Ask
Him to fall upon you like He did in Samaria…or on Pentecost…etc.

Many people have had lies sewn in their mind against this experience and need to have these lies
removed through sitting under anointed preaching .
I have laid hands upon people to receive the Holy Spirit and most times they receive instantly. Some
speak in tongues straight away, others later at home.

A lot of misconception is out there about tongues and the Holy Spirit. He does not take control of your tongue-NEVER! If that happens, it is
NOT GOD doing it. But this is not what I wanted to share tonight. The main thing is that we seek to
receive the Gift of God, which is the Blessed Holy Spirit.
I will share more on this next time. I would be honoured to pray for you to receive the infilling of
the Spirit of God. You can email me and I will pray to the Lord Jesus over the telephone for you.
This is normal Christianity-the POWER of God coming upon you…falling on you…embracing you
with affection and love. It is God’s great Gift to you my friend.
If you have no one that you know will pray this prayer for you..then contact me and I will email you
back and arrange a time to phone you.

Receive the Holy Spirit part 2

2Ti 1:6 Therefore I remind you to stir up(fan into a flame) the gift of God which is in
you through the laying on of my hands. 2Ti 1:7 For God has not given us a spirit of fear,
but of power and of love and of a sound mind. nkjv

The Gift of God is not just a spiritual gift or ability you were given by God but is the wonderful
Holy Spirit Himself…He is the Gift of God to all who repent and believe in Jesus Christ.

Act 2:38 Then Peter said to them, “Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the
name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy
Spirit. Act 2:39 For the promise is to you and to your children, and to all who are afar
off, as many as the Lord our God will call.”

As we saw in the previous blog post, when Peter declares that “you shall receive the Holy Spirit”, it
is usually through the laying on of hands and prayer that the Gift of the Holy Spirit is given.

Terms like fallen upon, fell upon, came upon, come upon,. are all used to describe the giving of the
gift of God to those who believe in Christ Jesus.

Act 2:33 Therefore being exalted to the right hand of God, and having received from the
Father the promise of the Holy Spirit, He poured out this which you now see and hear.

I also mentioned and will reiterate again that if you have had the Holy Spirit fall upon you and
embrace your spirit with affection you will KNOW IT! Peter declared under inspiration of this same
Holy Spirit that the promise of the Holy Spirit , which is the gift of God, was poured out on them…
and what happened could be seen and heard.

Of course we walk by faith not by feelings or sight or sound from natural senses, but when one
receives the Spirit of God He is sensed as being present in some way. Think of the two disciples on
the road to Emmaus. When the resurrected Jesus walked with them on the winding road their
“hearts burned within” them as He opened the scriptures to them.

Lu 24:32
burn”- kaio- means 1) to set on fire, light, burning. 2) to burn, consume with fire.

Their hearts burned within…what part of them burned within? Their hearts. Yes, as Jesus ministered
to them out of Himself(spirit), He was ministering to their spirits…their inner man…their hearts!!
What Jesus shared with them was not understood by these two disciples..but their hearts burned and
were set on fire by His Spirit words. Your heart is your spirit. Your spirit is of God and is the same
substance as God. God is SPIRIT and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and in truth.
God is looking for spirit to worship Him.

The only ones who are spirit in all creation are angels and
mankind. God is looking for you and me. Spirit calls to spirit to turn our hearts towards the source
of all life. Our spirit man came out from God and was lowered into this physical realm. I am talking
about our body. We are first of all spiritual beings. We live in a body and have a soul. It is to our
spirit that God comes.

All our lives we wander about in darkness having no light within us. Our spirit’s are darkened
through the COMPLETE ABSENCE of God in our spirit centre–our heart. The soul can be
educated very well and the body can be as sound as can be….but without the spirit receiving LIFE
we walk around as dead men and women not knowing where we are going or where we came from.
You are a spiritual being my friend. By that I simply mean that you were created in the image of
God-Who is Spirit. You will forever be incomplete if your spirit does not receive to itself God’s
Holy Spirit. What is stopping Him? Your soul.

We hear people say…”Oh I believe in God , but not like you born-again types!”
When God begins to awaken people to their need of Jesus Christ to save them they may feel very
uncomfortable. This is the conviction of the Holy Ghost as He begins to draw them. At this point
the soul which has been ruling as boss over the person’s whole being puts up its defences.

The attitude from most souls is, “I am my own person and I do not need Jesus Christ!”
However God does not ever give up pursuing us. It is funny how body language gives away what is
really going on in the heart of a lost human being. When someone who is burning with the flames of

the Holy Spirit in their spirit shares the good news about Jesus with an unbeliever, immediately they
will fold their arms across their mid section. Why is that?

I have seen this so many times on the street, or at my workplace and in preaching meetings. When
you understand that in the centre of our makeup is our spirit, then it makes sense. God wants to live
in each and every person, so He comes to each one at certain times for that purpose. He is not going
to force His way into a man. He gave you a free will with which to choose Him. A man may be
saying loud no’s to God or to the evangelist, but his spirit/heart is crying out even louder YES’S to
God. The cry of the lost is the loudest sound in all the universe!

The lost cry out night and day, and God Who is NOT FAR AWAY, hears their cry and is
always coming to them.

“Save me Oh God!! Help me!” “Is there anybody out there!!??” “O God please hear my

God’s answer to your desperate situation is for you to receive His Spirit- the Spirit of His Son-the
Holy Spirit- the Gift of God so that He will witness with their spirit that they are now children of

In life their are many difficulties we face. Our soul deals with these things all alone before we
receive the Holy Spirit. We try our best to walk through life in the power of our reasoning and ideas.
We develop the abilities of the soul in school, through books, through philosophies and meditation
techniques and religion. The soul – mind and emotion- IS NOT MEANT TO RULE YOUR BEING.
Rather, your soul is to be subservient to your spirit. But your spirit is not yet joined to God’s Spirit
so it is of no use – it is dead to God!

Most think that if they do yoga or Bhuddist type meditation techniques or astral projection or other
such things that they are spiritual. They equate certain psychic abilities with their spirit. In reality
those things are soulish. Their spirit is dead and sunk down within them and the only Spirit that can
can awaken and give them life is GOD. The soul of man is used by Satan. Man thinks he is free
when in fact he is a prisoner of darkness. The soul is earthly and sensual and influenced by spirits.

Whether that spirit influence is God or Devil is the question. Man is supposed to be spirit led. The
spirit is supposed to lead with the soul in full humble agreement. But through the fall mans soul
now has usurped the place of authority that the spirit had. Satan influences the soul realm and seeks
to keep a man from being made right side up through surrender to Jesus Christ.

When approached with the claims of Jesus Christ a person whose soul is influenced by Satan will
put up his or her defences and deflect everything that is said. They will cuss and swear, they will act
very nice to appear like an angel who does not need God….they will avoid you from then on…or
speak against you…or they may endure you, thinking you are a nut-job…all sorts of evasive tactics
are used by the soulish man …anything but surrender to the Holy Spirit!!

But our God has a way of trapping us in situations where we have opportunity to choose Him.

Joh 3:16 For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever
believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.
Joh 3:17 For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but thatthe world through Him might be saved.
Joh 3:18 “He who believes in Him is not condemned; but he who does not believe is
condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of
Joh 3:19 And this is the condemnation, that the light has come into the world, and men
loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil.
Joh 3:20 For everyone practicing evil hates the light and does not come to the light, lest
his deeds should be exposed.
Joh 3:21 But he who does the truth comes to the light, that his deeds may be clearly
seen, that they have been done in God.

In these crises times a man is often brought to the end of himself. He has exhausted his mental and
soulish ability to solve the problem….he looks away from himself to God to find the answer….his
spirit has been crying out to God NOT JUST TO SOLVE SOME TEMPORARY PROBLEM like
money or a relationship breakdown….but crying out to have GOD LIGHT UP HIS LIFE
FOREVER AND BE WITH HIM ALWAYS. That is the cry of everyman’s heart/spirit.

It is why Jesus Christ , God in Human flesh, came and lived perfect before all, and died on the cross
paying for our redemption. For God to answer the cry of your heart He had to cleanse you of all
your sin, forgiving you of all. Jesus’ death has done that. You are clean and forgiven through the
shed blood of Jesus Christ. Your soul/mind does not understand all these things…but in the coming
of God to you in your time of visitation, your spirit is given a touch from God and you surge toward
accepting Jesus as your Saviour.

Many people testify saying, “I don’t know what happened, I was arguing against God…and the next
thing, I walked out the front of the church and invited Jesus into my heart!”

It is the most wonderful thing in the universe to have Jesus Christ by His spirit come into your spirit
and make you whole. As we saw in the previous post, this initial coming to faith in Jesus may
include God’s Spirit falling upon you or it may not. Those in Cornelius’ house(Acts 10) , as they
believed what Peter was preaching, the Holy Spirit fell upon them and they began speaking praises
to God in tongues. But when the Samaritans(Acts 8) believed Philip’s message and were baptised,
the Holy Spirit did not fall upon them. It was not until Peter and John had travelled from Jerusalem
to Samaria and had prayed for them, laying hands upon them, that they received the Holy Spirit.

The same was true for Paul at his conversion(Acts 9) and for the disciples of John the Baptist that Paul met at Ephesus(Acts 19).

Both Paul and those disciples believed first…but still needed to receive the Holy Spirit baptism
afterwards. You might think I am labouring the point here. Yes, because I understand that many
many dear believers in Jesus are holding out against receiving the Holy Spirit, because they believe
there is nothing more to receive. They believed in Jesus at their initial conversion and were taught
by their pastors that that is all there is. Scriptural examples show otherwise.

I personally know pastors who disagree with the need for a second experience of receiving the Holy
Spirit. And I know for certain that they are filled with the Holy Ghost.

He has embraced their spirit. But because they are in denominations that openly teach against tongues and the gifts of the spirit as
in 1Cor 12 and 14, they have a blockage to those blessings. With the things of God it is always
according to our faith. God does not force things upon us.

If I own a lolly shop or a candy store that stocks 100 different types of candy..just because I only eat
20 kinds does not mean I do not have the potential to eat all 100. Many have been baptised in the
Holy Ghost but refuse to speak in tongues being biased against it.
It is not a salvation issue…however the gift of tongues is a wonderful blessing of the Spirit to us. To
not partake in it’s blessing leaves us ripped off.

Personal testimony

In 2009 I traveled to India to preach for 12 days. I preached in 11 different village churches
encouraging the saints and praying for the sick. The Father had been preparing my heart for that trip
for a few months prior. My first meeting was at the main church where 35 local pastors came to
hear what I had to share. The main overseer was present on the stage and my interpreter and my
host, a dear brother Syam Maddirala. This was an old mainline Pentecostal denominational church.
Even though they called themselves Pentecostal they had long since lost the flow of the Holy Spirit.
None of the pastors spoke in other tongues.
This in not unusual today even in the west. Many Charismatics and Pentecostals do not speak in
tongues much at all. They know they can if they want to, and they will do so if the pastor asks them
to in a meeting when praying for some issue. But in their own time at home and at work etc, they
never do so.
So here I was in India. I could sense the hunger in the hearts of these dear pastors…but could also
sense the controlling hardness opposing me as I preached.

The enemy/Satan does not want people to
1) Receive Jesus at all and
2) Receive the Holy Spirit’s embrace and
3)Speak in tongues.

Satan joins with the flesh(soul) in a man to keep him from Jesus Christ. If that man does believe in
Jesus, then Satan will attempt to snatch that seed of faith away immediately. Often a man will come
to the Lord and say a prayer….only to be saying a few days later that it was all just emotion. Any
attempts to interest that man in Scripture or fellowship with Jesus is met with the same evasive
blocking tactics of any unbeliever. That man will have to go back into the crucible of wilderness
wanderings until he is again brought to his senses and is granted repentance and faith towards our
Lord Jesus Christ. Believing in Jesus is not what changes the heart! Receiving the Spirit of Jesus-
The Holy Spirit is What or Who changes us.

When He comes in and joins Himself to our spirit we come alive and He fills our inner core with
joy and peace and love.-Himself. If a man believes and then gets baptised in water ..then the next
thing Satan will oppose is the receiving of the Holy Spirit. That is why we have tens of thousands in
denominations that reject this experience. God loves them and works in them and with them…but

they lack the inward power that characterised Jesus and the Apostles.

Jesus commanded the Apostles to wait in Jerusalem for the Promise of the Holy Spirit which He
would send.

Luk 24:49 Behold, I send the Promise of My Father upon you; but tarry in the city of
Jerusalem until you are endued with power from on high.

They already were believers but that was NOT ENOUGH!

Act 1:4 And being assembled together with them, He commanded them not to depart
from Jerusalem, but to wait for the Promise of the Father, “which,” He said, “you have
heard from Me;
Act 1:5 for John truly baptized with water, but you shall be baptized with the Holy
Spirit not many days from now.”

He commands all who believe in Him to not depart their Jerusalem—not to go out to disciple the
nations- until they are baptised with the Holy Spirit and with power! All those who do so will find
they have no power. They may convince by reasoning, but the breath of the Spirit will be absent
from their message. The Apostles and the rest of the 120 were obedient to Jesus…they waited for
the Promise.

They did not say, ‘Well, we believe in Jesus as Lord and Saviour…so let us go out into the nations
around about and preach the Good news.’” No!

They had done that when Jesus was with them in the flesh. They went out in His name and He had
conferred upon them His authority to cast out demons and to heal the sick. But now that He was
going away in the flesh….that would not work. He was going away in the flesh and returning to
them in the Spirit! They had to wait for Jesus to come again to them before they went anywhere in
His name.

On the day of Pentecost to fulfil the Prophets and the Law the Holy Spirit came upon them like fire
upon Mount Sinai. They received Jesus as the Helper, the Comforter, the Holy Spirit sent from God
to them.
Jesus said,

Act 1:8 But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you
shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of
the earth.”

When the Spirit of God comes upon an unbiased soul and joins Himself as ONE with that person’s
spirit He overflows out through the soul and flesh in praises and prophesying to the Father.
Act 2:4 And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other
tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.

The book of acts records this same experience over and over again. It is normal Christianity to
speak with “other tongues” to God. This is the third thing Satan will try to hinder or stop a believer
from entering into.It is bad enough to him that we believe in Jesus….going to church meetings does not bother him at
all…our getting baptised in water does not worry the devil either….BUT if we begin to move
towards receiving the infilling of the Holy Spirit and speaking in tongues he will fight to block it.

Every reason why you should stay away from such a message will go through your mind. People
who are anti will try to convince you it is wrong. It is a battle because the rewards are great. We
come into a life of power and the Devil’s kingdom suffers….or we stay powerless and the Devil’s
kingdom goes on prospering. God gave this ability to release power from your own spirit…but your
soul man can block it from being released by not assenting to you. (to your spirit/the real you)

Back to India..

In India when I preached to those 35 pastors, five of them stood up and received the Holy Spirit’s
infilling for the first time and they spoke in other tongues. There were joyful tears as they gave free
vent to their spirit’s voice in tongues to God. But in that same group of 35, many more were
hardened and skeptical. God is a gentleman and very patient. At the end of my time in India, those
pastors who were filled and spoke in tongues were so grateful to God for sending me to them. They
told how they had thought that they were unworthy to receive such a gift!(lies of Satan)

They felt that they were not good enough to speak in tongues like those in Scripture. How sad! Such
misunderstandings are the Devil’s work in the church. That is why I am writing this article–to
destroy the works of the Devil and set you free into the fullness of all that He came to give you. So
that you partake in and share in the wonderful stream and flow and gushings of God from within
your own recreated human spirit!

Joh 7:37 On the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried out, saying,
“If anyone thirsts, let him come to Me and drink
Joh 7:38 He who believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, out of his heart will flow
rivers of living water.”
Joh 7:39 But this He spoke concerning the Spirit, whom those believing in Him would
receive; for the Holy Spirit was not yet given, because Jesus was not yet glorified.

Paul told Timothy to fan into a flame the gift of God that is within through the laying on of my
hands. 2Ti 1:6 This is what speaking in tongues does in us. I will share more next time.
Dennis 28/06/15. 03:39:00 am.

Receive the Holy Spirit part 3

2Ti 1:6 For this reason, I am reminding you to fan into flames the gift of God that is
within you through the laying on of my hands.

In part one and two of this topic I laboured the point that “the Gift of God that is within us through
the laying on of my hands” is the receiving of the Holy Spirit…as John the Baptist prophesied that
they would receive.

Mat 3:11 I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance: but he that cometh after me
is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear: he shall baptize you with the
Holy Ghost, and with fire:..

It is clear that believing ONLY and being baptised in water was not sufficient in the minds of the
early Apostles. They made sure that people had hands layed on and the Gift of the Holy Spirit was
given and received. This was something that was seen and heard as Peter said in

Acts 2:33 Therefore being exalted to the right hand of God, and having received from
the Father the promise of the Holy Spirit, He poured out this which you now see and

And it is the same with other mentions of people receiving the Holy Spirit. There was something to
see or hear. And do not forget that Jesus Himself felt the Holy Spirit.

Luk 8:46 But Jesus said,
“Somebody touched Me, for I perceived power going out from Me.”

At the end of the last post I quoted John 7:37-39- here it is again. We need to look at this..

Joh 7:37 On the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried out, saying,
“If anyone thirsts, let him come to Me and drink.

As we have seen previously, just because you believe in Jesus does not automatically mean that you
have received the Holy Spirit. The multitudes in Samaria who believed and were baptised had still
not received the Holy Spirit. This is not my theory–this is the Bible!

Act 8:14 Now when the apostles who were at Jerusalem heard that Samaria had
received the word of God, they sent Peter and John to them,
Act 8:15 who, when they had come down, prayed for them that they might receive the
Holy Spirit.
Act 8:16 For as yet He had fallen upon none of them. They had only been baptized in
the name of the Lord Jesus.
Act 8:17 Then they laid hands on them, and they received the Holy Spirit.
Act 8:18 And when Simon saw that through the laying on of the apostles’ hands the
Holy Spirit was given, he offered them money,

God included this event in Scripture to show us the further need to make sure we receive the Holy
Spirit. It is not enough to simply believe the message. You and I must receive the One that the
message is about. Receiving the Spirit of God is receiving the Spirit of Jesus. You must receive the
Holy Spirit, and there will be evidence that you have received Him as Simon the Sorcerer can
testify. This evidence was shown as tongues and prophesying and praises to God.

Back to John 7

Jesus said out of the heart or belly of the believer would flow rivers of living water. But without the
receiving of the Holy Spirit there can be no rivers flowing out. You may need hands laid on you and prayer made to receive Him.

Jesus spoke this concerning the Holy Spirit. The rivers flowing are
what comes out from the Holy Spirit, whom those believing in Jesus would receive. The Spirit was
not yet given when Jesus said this. The Spirit was given to those who believed in Jesus

Many people read this passage in John 7 and simply believe intellectually that rivers of living water
are flowing out of their bellies to all around them. No! If you have not had Him FALL UPON YOU
and embrace your spirit, flooding you with His gushes and pourings, then there WILL NOT BE
ANYTHING flowing out of you my dear dear friend.

Some say that the Disciples received the Spirit in John 20:22 when Jesus breathed upon them. Jesus
Himself told them to wait in Jerusalem for the Promise- THE HOLY SPIRIT. Why would they need
to wait for this experience if they already had it? They did not have the Spirit yet. They believed…
but they still had not received Him because the Spirit had not yet been given or poured out as Peter
says in Acts 2:33.

Let this be established in your mind. Believing in Jesus changes no one!

Receiving Him by the reception of the Holy Spirit does.

Rivers of living water only flow out of the
believer who has received the Holy Spirit after they believed in Jesus.

Paul would not leave a believer alone today who could not demonstrate that they had had an
encounter with the living God. When he came across a certain group of disciples at Ephesus he did
not know them. He asked if they had received the Holy Spirit when they believed? Acts 19:2

Why ask such a question if one automatically receives the Holy Spirit when they believe on Jesus?

“What a stupid question!” many believers today would say. Not stupid at all. Where is the evidence
that you did receive Him?

For Paul the evidence was power, not words. It was tongues not good

Look at the story yourself in Acts 19.

Paul made sure that these guys got right. Their hearts
were soft and open to receive whatever Paul said….not like many “believers” today! After they had
believed on Jesus Paul baptised them in water and then laid hands on them and they RECEIVED

Okay let us move on…so Paul reminds Timothy to fan into a flame the Gift of God within him.
This is because although many of us have received the Holy Spirit we hardly ever speak in tongues
if at all. The fire grows dim. The tongue, we are told by James is a little member and it has the
power to ignite a large forest on fire. James spoke of it in a negative sense.

The Tongue is a little member!

Jas 3:5 Even so the tongue is a little member and boasts great things. See how great a
forest a little fire kindles!
Jas 3:6 And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity. The tongue is so set among our
members that it defiles the whole body, and sets on fire the course of nature; and it is set
on fire by hell. (gehenna)

No man can tame the tongue—BUT GOD CAN!

The tongue is so set among our members that is has a controlling influence…as we know..death and
life are in the power of the tongue. Words are important! God said, “Let there be light and there was
light.” When we receive the Holy Spirit the first thing that happens is the overflow of the Holy Spirit comes out of our mouth!
This is the rivers of living water that Jesus said shall flow out of the belly(spirit) of the one who
believes in Him. When we receive the Holy Spirit he embraces our spirit and brings us alive in Him.
The praises naturally flow and bubble and gush forth from our spirit to our surprise, in a language
we have never learned before. This speaking forth in other tongues is the river of life flowing. You
are giving thanks “WELL” when you join with the Holy Spirit in tongues.

1Co 14:17 For you indeed give thanks well, but the other is not edified.
1Co 14:18 I thank my God I speak with tongues more than you all;

Paul gave God thanks all the time in tongues…more than all the Corinthians did. When he was not
with people in a gathering, he spoke and sang and prayed to God in tongues more than all the
Corinthians. He said that doing this is indeed doing it well.

When the disciples first received the Holy Spirit on Pentecost their spirit’s blazed with the power
and life of God. And it is the same for all of us who have received Him. As we received Him in the
beginning with praises and giving thanks in tongues so we should continue to do so. Paul reminds
Timothy to fan into a flame the Spirit. This is one of the best ways to do this. It is not the only way
but it is the main way. God gave this ability to us for the purpose of edifying and building up our
inner man…our spirit.

1Co 14:2 For he who speaks in a tongue does not speak to men but to God, for no one
understands him; however, in the spirit he speaks mysteries.

When we speak in tongues we are speaking to God- ALWAYS. And what are we speaking?
Mysteries! Hidden things. They are hidden from us but not from God. They are hidden from the
enemy as well. Our spirit knows the things deep in our soul. Our spirit is now ONE with the Holy
Spirit IF we have received Him. By speaking in tongues the Spirit(ours and His)join together in
conversation with the Father. We do not understand what we are saying but we trust the verse above
is true and speak to God. These mysteries about ourself and about God are prayed over by our very

No carnal reasoning in the way! No unbelief from the natural man…just Spirit/spirit prayer to God.
Paul said that a mans spirit knows what is in that man…and Gods Spirit knows what is in God and
He searches the deep things of God.

1Co 2:9 But as it is written: “EYE HAS NOT SEEN, NOR EAR HEARD, NOR HAVE
1Co 2:10 But God has revealed them to us through His Spirit. For the Spirit searches all
things, yes, the deep things of God.
1Co 2:11 For what man knows the things of a man except the spirit of the man which is
in him? Even so no one knows the things of God except the Spirit of God.
1Co 2:12 Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from
God, that we might know the things that have been freely given to us by God.

This is what speaking to God is tongues accomplishes. That we might have revealed to us by the
S/spirit(we are ONE)the deep things of God….and the hidden mysteries of God….and the deep
things of ourselves that are hidden from our minds.

1Co 14:14 For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays, but my understanding is unfruitful.

My Spirit prays!!!

Do you see that?

You do not understand what you are saying with your
understanding, but you continue praying in tongues—which Paul says is my spirit praying. You
keep praying in tongues(in faith), not leaning on your own understanding which has ruled you all
your life. Oh how the flesh hates tongues!

The devil hates tongues because he knows how effective it is. He has not got a clue what you and
God are conversing about.

Religion hates tongues as well because religion is of the flesh…and Jesus said the FLESH PROFITS
NOTHING!! Religion has 100,000’s of believers who have never received the Holy Spirit and have
been taught against this wonderful, powerful ability of our recreated spirit. And the religious works
that these all are engaged PROFIT NOTHING!!

How has religion changed the world? Has Religion
brought revival? Has religion destroyed the works of the Devil? No, because it is of the flesh and
has no S/spirit power in it at all. It is the Harlot called Babylon who rides upon the Political and
financial beast..flee the flesh religion and get baptised in the Spirit my friend.

Paul reminds not just Timothy, but all of us to fan into a flame—to stir up the gift of God that is
within you through the laying on of hands. Give God your spirit in tongues for 10 minutes…just 10
minutes a day. If you have never prayed in tongues get someone who does to pray for you and lay
hands on you. The same way your spirit blazed with Holy Ghost fire when you first received Him is
the way God wants us every day!

Pray in tongues often. Paul said, “Do not forbid to speak in
tongues.” 1 Co14:39

Speaking in tongues edifies your spirit. That means it charges up and builds up your spirit man. Paul
spoke about not knowing the word of people who thought they were something special…but the
power! The Kingdom of God is not in words but in power! 1 Cor 4:19,20 The power resides in a
person’s spirit–not the soul. The soul can speak many words…good words…religious words…BUT
it is the spirit that gives life not the flesh. The words we speak must be spirit. Speaking in tongues
and praying to God in tongues releases God’s anointing from our/His Spirit in us.

1Co 14:3 But he who prophesies speaks edification and exhortation and comfort to men.
1Co 14:4 He who speaks in a tongue edifies himself, but he who prophesies edifies the

Speaking in tongues to people is silly. It is not for that. Prophesying, ie. preaching in the local
language is what edifies men. But speaking in tongues to God edifies and exhorts and comforts us.

This is why Paul says

1Co 14:5a I wish you all spoke with tongues, …

Paul obviously spoke in tongues a great deal. He said he spoke more than all of them…and that he
spoke 10,000 words in tongues when he was not with people. But in a meeting he only ever spoke with the understanding so as to edify and encourage the people listening. But no doubt, on his many
long lonely journeys Paul prayed for hours and hours in tongues to God.

Today we have been ripped off!

So many have not even experienced the receiving of the Holy
Spirit. Others have received Him long ago, but have long since stopped fanning the flame of their
spirit. They have been talked out of tongues…or have just become lazy. The flesh hates tongues and
will convince you that it is not necessary.

Well, let me encourage you to begin again to speak with your spirit to the Father. Your spirit will
again blaze for Him…the unseen hindrances in your soul life will be prayed over properly by you
and your Helper- The Holy Spirit. You will begin to see change and breakthrough where once all
was impossible.

Chasing the Dragon

Read “Chasing the Dragon” by Jackie Pullinger.

If it was not for her beginning to daily pray in tongues, it is doubtful whether any of the Triad gang members and hopeless drug addicts that were
saved and changed forever under her ministry would have ever listened to her. Her story
demonstrates perfectly Jesus promise…

Act 1:8 But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be
witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”

Receive the Holy Spirit part 4

We have seen in the previous studies that one must receive the Holy Spirit when they believe in
Jesus Christ. We are not to assume that we have received the Spirit just because we believe in Jesus
through a message from a preacher or a Bible tract etc. The Apostles made absolutely sure that
anyone who believed in Jesus ALSO received the Spirit of God. He is said to fall upon us, fell upon,
come upon, came upon..The act of His coming upon a person is seen and/or heard.

Have a look at Romans 7 and 8 with me. In Romans 7 Paul by the Spirit says

Rom 7:5 For when we were in the flesh, the sinful passions which were aroused by the
law were at work in our members to bear fruit to death

We were(past tense) in the flesh.

Then in Romans 8 he adds to this,…

Rom 8:8 So then, those who are in the flesh cannot please God.
Rom 8:9 But you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God dwells
in you. Now if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he is not His.

This describes what happens to us IF we have received the Spirit of Christ.

We go from being “in the flesh” to “in the spirit”. We were in the flesh, now we are in the Spirit.

We were in the flesh before we received the Spirit of God…our own human spirit was not in His embrace…

not joined with Him yet. Our spirit was sunk down and dead to God..we were in the
flesh, dwelling in death…under the law.

In the flesh we cannot please God. In other words, those who do not have the Holy Spirit cannot
please God. It matters not if they go to church and say they believe in Jesus, in heaven, in Hell….IF
THEY HAVE NOT THE SPIRIT OF GOD…they are in the FLESH and cannot please Him.

What pleases God? Without faith it is impossible to please Him. (Heb 11)

Faith pleases God. But not any old faith! It is His faith that pleases God. Have the God kind of Faith we are told in Mark

Most versions say “Have faith in God” many have, “Have faith of God”.

Faith is a gift from God…it is an attribute of the spirit. The Holy Spirit is a Person of Faith and when He joins with
your spirit, you now share in His faith.

So it is, that if you receive the Spirit of God you please God because in your spirit now resides in
the FAITHFUL ONE. He is full of faith…and your spirit is now full of His faith too. You are one
spirit. 1 Cor 6:17 Do you follow this?

The man who is “in the flesh” may be a man who is not yet converted by the Spirit. A believer who
has received the Spirit is said to be in the Spirit…but if he walks according to the flesh even though
he lives in the spirit, he does not walk pleasing to God!

The man who has received the Spirit of God is termed “in the Spirit”….in other words He is born of
the spirit..born again….converted from death to life…darkness to light. He pleases God. The one
who believes in Jesus in head only, who HAS NOT received the Holy Spirit since believing is NOT
BORN AGAIN..and cannot yet please God for His spirit remains dead.

Rom 8:8 So then, those who are in the flesh cannot please God. Rom 8:9 But you
are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God dwells in you. Now
if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he is not His.

Can you see that it is possible to believe the Bible and in Jesus but not have the Spirit dwelling in
you? If anyone does NOT HAVE THE SPIRIT OF CHRIST he is not His. In other words Paul knew
that there were some in every congregation who had come to believe the message of the gospel, but
who had NOT YET RECEIVED THE SPIRIT OF GOD. They are in the flesh still.

Again I must refer back to scriptural examples of people receiving the Holy Spirit. In almost every case they
spoke in tongues and prophesied and praised God. Something was seen and heard so that the
Apostles knew that they had received just as they themselves had received. Today there are
thousands who believe in Jesus who have NEVER received the Holy Spirit as the Apostles and
early church did. Listen to Peter…

Act 11:15 And as I began to speak, the Holy Spirit fell upon them, as upon us at the
beginning. Act 11:16 Then I remembered the word of the Lord, how He said, ‘John
indeed baptized with water, but you shall be baptized with the Holy Spirit.’ Act 11:17 If
therefore God gave them the same gift as He gave us when we believed on the Lord
Jesus Christ, who was I that I could withstand God?”

There is that wonderful Greek word again..The Holy Spirit FELL UPON them…He epipipto them.
epipipto ep-ee-pip’-to – to embrace (with affection) or seize (with more or less violence;
literally or figuratively): – fall into (on, upon), lie on, press upon.

O dear one, can you see this? Have you received the Holy Spirit like they did? Did He fall upon
you, seizing your spirit with violence? Did He embrace your spirit, your inner man with affection
and love ? YOU WOULD KNOW FOR CERTAIN…because He can be felt by our spirit. Are you
alive? Or are you still in the flesh?

This is serious and I am impelled by the spirit within me to challenge you again today. I thought I
had left off this topic…but the Lord wants to challenge again. Why? Because thousands believe in
Jesus…perhaps since childhood…who have never once received the HOLY SPIRIT..who is called
the Spirit of Christ, the Spirit of God, the Spirit of Jesus.

They have been taught falsely, that when they first believed in Jesus that they received all there is to
receive of the Holy Spirit…they have been warned to not listen to any message that says there is a
second experience of receiving the Spirit.

Those traditions have left them unfulfilled ..they are STILL IN THE FLESH and do not HAVE THE
SPIRIT in them. (Look at acts 8, 10/11 and 19 or read my last 3 posts.)

Rom 8:10 And if Christ is in you, the body is dead because of sin, but the Spirit is life
because of righteousness.

Rom 8:11 But if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the
dead dwells in you, He who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your
mortal bodies through His Spirit who dwells in you.

Look at all the IF’s …they are there because it is NOT an automatic thing.

Receiving the Holy Spirit is a separate thing from believing that Jesus is the Saviour.

If I preached to any gathering and at the end of the message asked who among them believes that
Jesus is the Saviour?…that Jesus is the Lord?…that Jesus died for them and rose again for them?
And many hands went up agreeing with the message…what then?

Do I send them home? NO!!!

I make sure these people receive Jesus Christ. “Oh!” you say… “I received Jesus”. Really?
Did you speak in tongues? Did rivers of living water flow out of your belly? Did the Holy Spirit
violently seize your spirit? Did he embrace you with affection?

That is what is meant to happen.

But no…People are often led in a prayer…Come into my heart Lord Jesus, be my Lord and Saviour
amen. Or some other variation on the same thing. They are now told that they received Jesus Christ.

They are told to always remember this day. The day you got saved…or born again. BUT Brethren!!

If they did not receive The Holy Spirit as we(Peter and the others)did…then they have not received
Him at all yet.
They are still in the flesh! Where do we get off changing the way God does things, and calling it

Those people who said a prayer like that, and believe the things concerning Jesus Christ, NEED TO
HAVE HANDS LAID ON THEM and prayer made for them to receive the baptism in the Holy
Spirit. They have been left with a false assurance and now live by the power of the flesh. They cannot
please God. The one praying and laying on the hands needs to be full of the Holy Ghost as well. It
is no use someone praying for a believer to receive the Holy Spirit, if they themselves have let the
fire go out. Let your lamps be burning and your waists be girded.

How is your oil supply? Is your fire burning, is your lamp bright or dull? Has it gone out? As I
shared in the last post…speaking in tongues is how you can fan into a flame the gift of God that is
in you. Praise, worship, tongues, confession of the Word…all these things fan the fire.

Eph 5:18 And do not be drunk with wine, in which is dissipation; but be filled with the

Eph 5:19 speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs,
singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord,

Eph 5:20 giving thanks always
for all things to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ,

Eph 5:21
submitting to one another in the fear of God.

Not only can we do these things with the understanding and so fan our spirit man…but we can give
thanks well in tongues to God…we can sing in tongues to God…we can speak and pray in tongues
TO GOD…All these things edify and build up and charge up the inner man-our spirit…our lamp.
But again I say, every believer MUST RECEIVE THE SPIRIT FIRST to be able to walk in the
spirit and be pleasing to God.

Rom 8:15 For you did not receive the spirit of bondage again to fear, but you received
the Spirit of adoption by whom we cry out, “Abba, Father.” Rom 8:16 The Spirit
Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God,

See again Paul’s emphasis on RECEIVING the Spirit. Why is that? Because He himself received
the Spirit AFTER FIRST BELIEVING that Jesus is Messiah(Christ).Acts 9:17

The verses above shed light on why many, many people have no witness in their spirit that they are
children of God. They will not have any witness if they have not YET RECEIVED the Holy Spirit.

SO what happens is, they look at their church activities as proof to themselves and the other dead
ones, that they are children of God. I don’t blame is TRAGIC!!

One day God will get a hold of them and they shall receive the Spirit of Jesus and OOOOH!!! what
a difference He will make! They will testify that they thought they were saved all those years, but
they now know that they were in the flesh!! May God give us all the grace to humbly see whether
Christ be in us or not. Not by any human standard…but by the examples laid out for us in the Book
of Acts. These examples were written down for us to see that a person RECEIVES the Spirit of
Christ AFTER believing…and that when RECEIVED the Spirit of God causes that person to be
filled and overflow with words that can be heard…and He does things in them that can be seen.

Am example from India

In India in 2009 as I preached on the main street in Guntur, Andhra Pradesh, a brother came to me
afterwards. This dear Indian brother told me he had just done 3 years Bible College and wanted to
be an evangelist..but he said,
” I do not have the power like I see in you.”
He did not know that an hour before, I was shaking in my boots, so nervous to obey the Spirit and

go and preach on the street that night. But that night was Shavuot/Pentecost. I told the brother that I
would gladly pray and lay hands on him…that he can receive all the power he needs to I spoke with him, my hand on his shoulder…the power of God fell upon us both!!

I felt the power of God press against us..he fell and I lowered him to the pavement. He immediately
was bubbling over in tongues to God…tears of joy streaming down his face!! It was marvelous!
Even as I write this now I weep for joy and am filled again with the power of God.
Was the brother saved already? God knows. I believe so.

Had he received the Holy Spirit? If not then he was still in the flesh…ie- “unsaved” if you want to use that term. I believe he like many had
really received the Holy Spirit when he believed BUT he had not had Him fall upon Him and
baptise him.

Anyway…the thing is the brother knew he had no power and God made sure that I was sent all the
way from Australia to stand on the street that night, being Pentecost…and preach as he just
happened to walk by. Maybe this is another moment like that for you? Maybe you just happened to
read my blog and here you are confronted by God with your impotence, your lack of life, joy, peace
and power? Well what are you going to do?

You need to know whether you have received the Holy Spirit or not. May this word encourage to
seek God about this very important thing. I would be honoured to pray for you If you do not have
anyone who will do this. Just ask your Father to baptise you in the Holy Spirit. Believe that He
hears your prayer and believe that you have received. Luke 11:13 Mark 11:22-24
